Devhonte ‘Bones’ Johnson is a black belt under Unity Jiu Jitsu Professor Murilo Santana. Regarded as one of the top American grapplers of his generation, Devhonte has earned multiple World, Pan American and European titles in the colored belt divisions as well as black belt IBJJF Worlds No-Gi, Pan American No-Gi and European No-Gi Championships.
Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Devhonte became increasingly interested in sports as a child. Baseball and basketball became his passion through sophomore year at Eastside High School when he decided to devote his time solely to baseball. By chance, Devhonte discovered Jiu Jitsu during his senior year, a martial art that would change his path and life.
Coach Edson Carvalho was Devhonte’s first Jiu Jitsu instructor and the man who guided him to purple belt. Bones always believed he could achieve the highest honors of Jiu Jitsu and trained hard to achieve these goals. In 2015, Devhonte left team Carvalho to join Unity Jiu Jitsu in New York City.
At Unity, Professor Murilo Santana became a trusted mentor, structuring Devhonte’s training and raising his natural abilities and attributes to a world class level. On August 2018, after a spectacular year as a brown belt when Devhonte conquered the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, IBJJF European Open Championship as well as the IBJJF Pans No-Gi Championship, Johnson was awarded his black belt rank by Murilo.
Devhonte has been coaching Jiu Jitsu since purple belt, given the opportunity to teach a few classes at Unity HQ in Manhattan. Months later, after a few requests from friends to teach them and their children turned into a consistent flow of students, there was the need to grow into a new space.
