Frequently Asked Questions

Training Questions

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions regarding training:

Do I need prior experience to start Jiu Jitsu?

No experience is necessary. Our program is structured so complete beginners can learn the fundamentals step by step in a safe and supportive environment. Many of our students started with zero martial arts experience.

How often should I train each week?

Most students train between two and four times per week. Consistency is the most important factor for progress, and our class schedule allows you to build a routine that fits your lifestyle.

Is Jiu Jitsu a good workout?

Yes. Jiu Jitsu naturally builds strength, endurance, mobility, and coordination while you learn practical skills. Because training is engaging and constantly evolving, many students find it far more enjoyable than traditional workouts.

Is training safe for beginners?

Safety is a top priority in every class. Our coaches emphasize proper technique, controlled training, and respect between partners so students can learn and improve without unnecessary risk.

What should I bring to my first class?

For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing is all you need. If you decide to continue training, our coaches will help guide you on the proper Gi or NoGi gear to purchase.

Do you offer training for students who want to compete?

Yes. Bones Jiu Jitsu offers structured competition training for students who want to test their skills in tournaments. Our coaches have years of experience competing at the highest levels and help athletes prepare through focused drilling, strategy development, and high-level training rounds.

Even if you don’t plan to compete, training alongside dedicated athletes often helps students improve faster and raise the overall level of the room.

Your first class will introduce you to the basics of Jiu Jitsu in a beginner-friendly setting. A coach will guide you through the techniques and help you feel comfortable while training with the group.

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

No. Our classes are designed to help you improve your fitness as you train. Students start at many different fitness levels, and the intensity naturally builds as your conditioning improves.

What if I’m nervous about starting?

Feeling nervous is completely normal. Our academy has a welcoming, team-oriented culture where new students are supported and encouraged as they learn.
